Paper Abstract:
|
This paper discusses the increased visuality in news reporting about war and military conflicts, outlines the reasons for
this development and stresses its potential effects on public perception and opinion shaping. The rising number of images
in news media places an important responsibility on quality journalism with regards to a balanced coverage of the parties
involved in the reported conflict in the verbal and visual text and coherence between the two modes of presentation. The
paper also introduces the findings of a content analysis of news reports covering the most recent Gaza-crisis in four
European news media. The study discloses that the representation of the conflicting parties has not been balanced but
differed apparently in the visual and verbal text. While the Israeli perspective prevailed in the written text, images were
dominantly depicting the Palestinian civil population. These results account for the importance of qualitative news
reporting on either the visual and the verbal level. The results underscore the necessity of considering image-text relations
within the methodological designs of content research. |
